臺灣的咖啡達人密度高到不可思議的程度。百家爭鳴,各有所長。之前零北呷好倒相報,到荷俚特按耐府城的朋友。到了府城,地頭蛇就以新化老街咖啡報李。他說,府城是臺灣自家烘培咖啡豆的濫觴。

The density of specialized cafe in Formosa is amazingly high. All of them has got their own forte. After treating my friend from Tainan at CoffeeHolic, he treated me in Xinhua Olde Town Cafe in return. He told me Tainan is the origin of specialized cafe in Formosa.

新化老街咖啡的曼巴讓零北驚豔。可一問價錢,還真嚇了一跳:便宜得太誇張。半磅竟然只要260大洋。在高雄打狗,這種品質的豆子的行情是400上下啊...

I am impressed by their coffee, and the price for beans is even better. Only NT$260 for one half pound. In KaohsiungTakao, beans this good would cost around NT$400.



菜單上有咖啡拿鐵,櫃台上也有Espresso機。可是菜單上就沒有espresso。我就問老闆娘賣不賣?她說,要是我能等的話,等老闆回來再喝。於是我就等了。

Cafe Latte is listed on the menu, and there is also an espresso machine on the counter. However, espresso is not listed on the menu. I asked the hostess if I may sample one. She recommended patience for the return of the host.


老闆回來後,看到零北為這麼厚的咖啡脂大驚小怪驚豔時,還補一槍說這不過是「正常」。
After the return of the host, I was amazed by the thickness of the crema. They said this was only "normal."

零北很好奇:這麼好的Espresso,為啥不在菜單上?
老闆解釋道:是為了避免爭議。他說:歐洲的espresso用的是Robusta的豆子,那雖然只是成本考量,但很多人喝慣了那味道,喝不慣他們用的Arabica。爆多豆,只取前段。

I was curious why espresso is not listed on the menu. The host explained, it was to avoid controversy. European espresso uses Robusta beans to cut down the cost. However, most people are used to that taste already. Here they use generous amount of Arabica, and under extract.


老闆跟老闆娘都退休後來圓咖啡店的夢,都認為:要感動別人,必須先感動自己。從菜單就知道他們是字字斟酌的內行。

Latte 其實是義大利文的「牛奶」。所以「拿鐵」就只是「牛奶」。Caffe Latte 必須是「咖啡拿鐵」。從細分並註解菜單上不同的「拿鐵」,可以看出他們用字不但認真、精確,還溫柔、細心地考慮到要照顧那些積非成是、不求甚解的笨蛋、土炮顧客。
