Please treat e-mail as postcards: anything you are not comfortable sending by a postcard, do not write that in an e-mail.

As its name indicates, Inter-Net is a giant net based on connected local area networks. Everything transmitted through the Internet is relayed through someone else's network. All the information relayed by a network can be intercepted. It is very easy to write small programs to filter the target information, such as ID number, driver's licence number, etc. Hence the privacy of an e-mail is even worse than a postcard, as an e-mail needs to go through more organizations than a postcard.

If you must send sensitive information via e-mail, you should encrypt it. If you do not know how to, then you can at least scramble your message, and, through another channel, teach the recipient how to unscramble it.
